ShopTruck Project (a.k.a. 850i carmafied)

The BMW 850is are some of the prettiest BMWs ever made. Its use as a shop truck may be a bit of a stretch, but as the ultimate budget grand touring car it is unbeatable. We at Carma feel that with a little work and love many great cars from the past can live on. It is our own form of recycling. The 850 was such a great car in it's day and now can be had for 10 to 20 thousand dollars. Quite a deal for what was once the most expensive BMW made! This coupe 4 seater was the perfect platform for some planned and some not so planned upgrades. Unfortunately the previous owner failed to mention the heater core leaking, the brakes
all down to the metal, the cracked flex disc, and the head gasket leak. Besides those issues, what a great car.

First things first, new high flow air filters were installed. This is a very inexpensive upgrade with unbelievable power increases. K&N filters are the filters of choice. They come with a million mile warranty and are cleanable\reusable. Carma offers K&N filters for almost all BMWs and Mercedes and generally run under $100.00 installed.

Next was a control unit upgrade. By replacing the “chip” in the engines' control unit the ignition-timing curve and fuel delivery maps are re-calibrated. This is good for anywhere from a 20-horse power increase to a 45-horse power increase. Typically the car also will feel crisper off the line as well. Carma can perform these chip upgrades and are priced from $300.00 to $500.00 depending on the application. These two upgrades as well as a new set of wheels were the only original planned upgrades. Of course the more we looked around the picture became all too clear, but the sound was lacking. The mufflers were all rotted out. They are not making a lot of noise, but that is almost part of the problem. Carma is a distributor for EisenHaus, one of the best performance exhaust companies. New mufflers are on order, or we should say, back-order. Now that the car was becoming more mechanical sound, what about the looks.
