Oil sludging is the severe result of infrequent oil services. BMW and Mercedes-Benz, using their flexible service schedules, recommend oil services as infrequently as 15,000 miles. This lack of service allows the engine oil to break down and pick up large amounts of deposits from the combustion process. This chemically changed oil, once exposed to high temperatures, eventually turns into a gel-like substance, not unlike pudding. Unfortunately, this oil sludge substance does not transfer heat away from the engine's moving parts very well, nor does it offer much in the ways of lubrication. It instead serves to insulate the engine parts, causing an increase in engine temperatures. Additionally chunks of sludge can dislodge and work their way into the oil pump pick-up and other oil passages, possibly leading to a catastrophic engine failure due to lack of oil pressure. Carma recommends oil service intervals of 7,500 miles with synthetic or 3,750 with regular motor oil. We always use name brand, high quality motor oils -- either BMW Synthetic 5W30 or Valvoline 15W40, depending on what the vehicle requires. If your engine has already begun to sludge, the best thing to do is reduce your oil service intervals immediately, and take a trip to Carma for an oil flush in order to reduce engine sludge deposits.
