BMW 2000tii Touring Restoration

Beginning in the Spring of 2009, Carma Motorsports embarked upon a journey of restoration involving one 1972 BMW 2000tii Touring. 

The BMW '02 series touring was a hatchback version of the popular 1602-2002 series sold during the 1971 through 1974 model years.  A total of 31,195  were produced, of which 5,783  were "tii" variants. The tii is considered the "high performance" variant of the '02 series, with mechanical fuel injection, upgraded suspension and larger brakes, among other improvements. The 2.0 liter fuel-injected engine produced 30% more power than the regular carbureted engine on standard 2002's, and braking was improved by using some components from the larger six-cylinder models.

The touring model was never officially imported to the U.S. by BMW, but over the years many enthusiasts have purchased used ones in Europe and imported them as "grey market" vehicles. Les Cartwright, a touring owner from Texas, has accounted for 46 tourings in the U.S. , 27 of them being tii's.

This particular 1972 2000tii (VIN # 3422789) was imported from the Netherlands to California. It then was sold and sent to Arkansas, before winding up at Carma Motorsports. Although complete, the body is in very rusty condition. Since it would be practically impossible to restore to stock condition, it will be tastefully modified cosmetically and mechanically to turn it into a good looking driver. This will include a 2002 turbo flare and spoiler kit, color change, 15" wheels and other mods/upgrades. The car is being worked on by a BMW 2002 enthusiast with over 25 years of experience. If it had been a "regular" 2002, it would've probably been parted out, but, being a touring AND a tii, it needed to be saved.

Spring 2010 Update:

This project has been put on hold. The vehicle is being stored for the time being, and Carma is making room for new projects, amongst them an Active Autowerks Supercharger install on an E46 330ci.
